Ideal
Weighing Scales for Alpacas |
|
|
We
wanted a simple and practical way to monitor the weight of our animals.
We all know how precious they are, both in monetary terms and otherwise.
Tracking weight gain/loss in young cria, as well as nursing mums,
can give an early warning of many impending problems.
We
spent a long time looking for a set of scales which could be used
in the paddocks. So we needed self-contained mains or rechargable
battery operation, no moving parts, with easy wash down, weather-proof
and solid construction.
Plus
light enough to move around easily, as well as the right size and
accuracy to weigh anything from an 8Kg cria to a 75Kg pregnant mum.
A USB interface to a notebook PC would be nice too.

Surprisingly,
we couldn't find anything suitable at a sensible price in the UK.
We eventually dicovered the ideal specification at Arlyn Scales
in the US. Our only concern was the difficulty of dealing with a
supplier 3000 miles away.
In
fact, we had no problems - the scales turned up on time, worked
just the way we expected, and appear to be very well constructed
in stainless steel. And we had no problem dealing with the people
at Arlyn, who were very happy to answer all our idiot questions.
So
they are definitely an addition to our recommended list. Total cost
- with all the bells & whistles - plus freight, import duty,
etc was less than £1000. Certainly not cheap, but nearly half
the cost of anything comparable we could find in the UK.
